Five reasons why marketing is a great career

If ever there was a debate around the top careers in the world, marketing is up there. Earlier this year, Glassdoor compiled a list of the 25 best jobs in the UK based on job satisfaction, earning potential and open vacancies1. Marketing came in at a respectable number 10. This is great news for the marketing industry as we rally together to promote why a career in marketing is unique, and we wanted to kick off the conversation about why we love marketing.

5 Reasons why marketing is a great career

1. You adopt an abundance of transferrable skills.

One of the top reasons people love marketing is the variety it instils – a career in marketing is made up of so many different skill sets, roles and responsibilities that provide ample opportunities to grow and pivot just within the industry itself. Marketing isn’t just about managing social media channels or creating big out of home campaigns; there are so many different options when choosing a career in marketing that can play to an individual’s strengths, for example, strategic roles, research, creative, digital and analysts. These positions teach highly transferable skills that can allow movement within the industry or transfer to a completely different industry in the future.

2. It’s a highly creative career.

There are endless amounts of room for creativity in a marketing career when thinking differently and creating campaigns, whether that’s using behavioural science to look at a problem from a different perspective, working in or with design teams to think up campaign ideas or getting creative with your copywriting.

3. You don’t need a degree.

One of the main reasons marketing can be an excellent career for anyone is that you don’t need a degree to land a job. As a result, many more people are opting for entry-level roles to learn on the job or apprenticeships where you can study and work at the same time without ramping up large university debt. It’s a win-win.

4. There is a certain level of behavioural psychology at play.

Do you love people watching and assessing why people do what they do? This curiosity about psychology and behaviour makes a marketing career so enjoyable. Researching and asking the right questions can make the whole world of difference to a campaign brief and ultimately make or break your product offering. Customer orientation, therefore, is an absolute must for a marketing career.

5. It’s a collaborative career.

If you thrive in an environment where you get to work with different groups of people, then marketing is for you. Rarely is marketing a solo career – it involves collaborating with many other people and teams to create great work. This allows you to build your network and relationships while honing your communication skills – something that is essential for a marketing career!

If those five reasons aren’t persuasive enough, consider the different types of business you could go into. First, there’s the client-side, where you could work for a traditional brand in a variety of marketing roles helping to grow the business and build the brand long-term. Alternatively, you could join a marketing agency and work for various clients, allowing them to create winning strategies for their brand.

Ultimately, there are endless options within marketing, which makes it such a favourable career choice among those in the industry. So, if you’re debating whether to take the plunge, this article has hopefully helped bring to life what working in a marketing role could consist of. Trust us when we say that you won’t turn back once you land in marketing.
